This video is based on a method discussed by Nicholas Sonder in the book SketchUp to Layout for Architecture. This book contains many other methods for taking your Layout Documents to the next level, so if you’re interested in checking it out, there’s more information about it, as well as other Layout Resources at www.thesketchupessentials.com.
There are a couple different ways that you can utilize this method. The first, and probably the most utilized method, is by applying fog to elevation drawings in order to emphasize the areas that the elevation is meant to illustrate, while de-emphasizing the other areas of your elevation.
In this case, we’ll use this home model from the Placemaker Building Bundle, which is a series of building models that are included for use as context models with a Placemaker license (more info in notes below).
As you can see, part of this building that shows up in this elevation is set back. We’re going to use fog to visually indicate that the portion of this building that should be the focus of this plan is the area in the foreground. Set the distance of your fog back a bit in order to obscure that area enough that it doesn’t show through as well.
You can also use it in a plan view to bring emphasis to a building on a site. For example, you can set your site layer view so that it has fog, then add another view for your building, which does not have fog. By combining the two, you can generate emphasis on your building while still displaying your site in Layout.

One thing to note – to purchase a license, you’re going to also need to have the most up to date version of the SketchUcation store on your computer as well, otherwise you won’t be able to purchase. This was a bit confusing to me until I updated, at which point it got a lot simpler.
Tool Functions:
This extension is designed for simulating cloth within SketchUp. You can use it to hang and drape different fabrics within your SketchUp models.
You can adjust different settings, like gravity, wind, drag, and well as the timestep and rate that the extension calculates and updates your materials.
This extension operates much like the extension MSPhysics, which was developed by the same author. You can interact with the geometry while the extension plays by clicking and dragging.
The way it works is actually fairly simple. You create different groups, then you right click and tell clothworks if they’re cloth, pins, or colliders. A collider is an object that interacts with your fabric without moving. For your cloth to work properly, you’re going to have to subdivide your cloth objects, which you can do by right clicking and going down to your cloth object, then applying a grid.
If you turn on hidden geometry, you can tell that what this is doing is subdividing your face so that it can be draped over your geometry.
Note that there are also options for turning on self-collision in the object section of the menu, allowing even greater realism by keeping the cloth from overlapping itself.
You can also set fixed points, or pins, in order to hang cloth. Note that these are also editable, meaning you can move them around within your cloth simulation. Single and multiple points can be selected and moved.
Wind can also be simulated, though in order for it to be done properly, you need to set your settings a certain way.
One other great feature of this extension is its ability to UV map your materials. Note that this only works if you apply the materials BEFORE you run the simulation.
Once you’ve run your simulation, you can use one of the smooth options within the material settings to really make your model look nice.
Overall, I’m very impressed with this extension. It brings something to SketchUp that you really didn’t have before – that ability to simulate actual cloth. Once you get started with it, it’s actually fairly easy to use.

A little over a week ago, a blog post came out on SketchUp’s website about some changes they’d made to search within the 3D warehouse, so I thought I’d make a video checking out some of the changes.

Historically, finding what you want in the Warehouse has been a bit challenging with the built-in tools, so I was very excited to give this a try.
Exploring the SketchUp 3D warehouse search changes
To start, you can access it by going to file, 3D warehouse, get models.
When you first open it up, it looks very similar to the way it looked before – you get a kind of landing page with all of the highlighted models.
However, where the changes really start to shop up is when you do a search for an object. For example, let’s do a search for some trees to add to our model. As you can see, this pulls up a list of about 20,000 options.
There’s still a drop down box on the right where you can sort by relevance, popularity, date added, etc. Most likely you’ll find yourself using the popularity sort most often.
In addition, the tab for collections is still there, so you can search for collections of models as well as individual models.
The big change came off to the side on the left. They’ve gotten rid of advanced search, which was fairly difficult to use, and replaced it with this more intuitive sidebar system.
You can now add keywords to your searches, allowing you to modify your search results fairly easily.
In addition, they’ve added two sliders off to the side to allow you to search for models of a certain complexity level. This can be especially useful when looking for lightweight entourage or landscaping models.
There’s now an option for you to be able to specifically search manufacturer models – models created specifically by manufacturers of casework, equipment, and more. This can be good, especially when looking for specific product models that you know will be to the correct scale.
You can narrow your search to dynamic components, which are components with special attributes that you can edit. This can be useful for looking for things like windows that you can adjust without having to re-model them.
You can also look for geolocated models, or models that have a location associated with them.
You can also search for the actual title of a model, or by author name. This is probably the item I’ll find most useful, as often I have an idea of a model creator that creates good models, but previously it was fairly difficult to find those models by author.
Finally, you can also look for models by date of modification.
There are a couple tips I’d like to highlight for the 3D warehouse as well, though they’re not new features. The first is collections. As you continue doing work in SketchUp, you’ll find that you keep coming back to certain collections over and over. For example, I consistently keep coming back and using the 2D and 3D plants from SketchUp itself. What you can do is add a model or a collection to your own collection to find it easily. In this case, what I’d do is find the collection that I want and click “Add to collection.” You can then add it to a collection you’ve created. Your collections can be found by visiting “My Collections” under your account name. You can also like a collection and it will show up in your liked collections list.
The second thing I wanted to highlight is the ability to download materials into your models. You can download the materials out of any model simply by clicking on the word “materials.” This will pull up a list of materials that you can download without downloading the model itself.

In this video, we’re going to talk about using the extension SketchFX to create a split style rendering scene. This is something that you could create using something like Photoshop, but SketchFX makes things easier to create without having to have in-depth photoshop knowledge.

What we’re going to do in this model is create an image where we transition from one style to the other using masks in SketchFX.
This is a building I brought in from the Placemaker Building bundle – it’s a series of models that you get when you purchase a license for Placemaker, and I thought it would be a pretty good example model (except that the right tower is a bit high). I’ll link to that in the notes down below, but this will work with basically any model.
Apply a style. A few things to remember –
For slower PC’s, turn auto update off. This way it’s not updating every single time you orbit in your model. You can click the refresh button to update your view.
Tip 2 – sometimes, your view will lock on whatever SketchFX last rendered when auto update is off. Simple tap the space key to get out of your current view and back to your model space.
First thing – apply a style. Use a preset.
Once you’ve done this, we’re going to use a mask to overlay another style and also create a sky in the background.
In this case, we’re going to use a linear mask to apply a style.
In addition, we’re also going to apply a sky to our background, also using masking.
